Frequently Asked Questions
about sustainable backyard farms and gardens

Q: Can I have a garden?

A: Backyard Farmer performs free soil test with our consultations. We test for pH balance and nutrient levels, as well as other suitabilities for growing. Depending on results, we can add organic matter (compost) and other natural fertilizers to amend your soil without having to use chemicals or pesticides.

Q: Does poor soil mean I can't have a garden?

A: Even with poor soil conditions, we can design raised beds or straw bale gardens that produce healthy natural food.

Q: What if I don't have a back yard?

A: We can design and build custom units that fit on porches, roof-tops or any sunny spot. We also help neighborhoods organize community gardens.

Q: How are harmful pests and animals deterred?

A: We will incorporate permacultural methods that utilize natural cycles and interrelationships among plants and animals that replicate natural ecosystems. Upon request, we can install fences or living borders.

Q: How much work will a garden require?

A: The customer gets to choose their own involvement. Backyard Farmer can manage every aspect of garden maintenance. However, we also give you the opportunity to learn and take care of the plot yourself. We encourage growing as a healthy activity for families and communities.

Q: What can I grow?

A: What do you like? Backyard Farmer can grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and grains. Virginia's climate is conducive to a wide diversity of crops and has relatively mild winters that allow growers to extend seasons during both Spring and Fall.

Q: How much produce can I expect from my backyard plot?

A: Backyard Farmer implements bio-intensive methods that have proven to produce high yields in small spaces. Plants are closely spaced in wide, deeply dug beds which reduce the amount of weeds and naturally increase soil fertility. Yields vary depending on size of gardens and choice of crops.
