What You Can Grow in a Sustainable Backyard Farm or Garden

Cool Season Crops

Crops grown early in the spring and fall are referred to as cool season crops. They require cooler soil temperatures and reduced exposure to direct sunlight. You can start seeds indoors as early as February and start harvesting as early as May. Cool season crops are many of your leafy greens, root crops and some early grains. We encourage growers to get started early in the season. The longer we extend our seasons, the closer we come to a locally sourced food system.

  • Warm Season Crops
Crops started in late spring and throughout the summer are referred to as warm season crops. Warm season crops require warmer temperature and longer periods of direct sunlight in order to flourish. Warm season crops include many staple foods, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash and melons. We encourage everyone to grow these popular summer time kitchen ingredients, while remaining aware of moisture levels and sensitivities to heat.
